What the Words Say

An eagle will not miss its target; if it misses it will grab anything.

What It Means

A persevering man always finds something, however small, to show for his effort even in the face frustration.

Cultural Context

The proverb is based on the hard working and calculated actions of the eagle. With a very sharp eye, its soars high up and can pick our prey like chicks or mice from high heights. It will observe and observe and when it is ready and sure, it will swoop down in one fast motion. When it is close enough it will pull out its talons and grab whatever it saw from far up high. Many a times the eagle will prevail, but sometimes it misses or mistakes something worthless like plain rubbish for prey. This allegory brought two seemingly opposing lessons for our elders. On the one hand the perseverance of the eagle meant it never left with nothing at all but on the other end the eagle was likened to the person of stature who fails to get what he wants and s/he settles for anything they can get their hands on.

How It's Used

The proverb is used to acknowledge the importance of perseverance and endeavour by highlighting that there is always reward. It also used in a mocking way towards someone of high standing who has failed to get what they want and are now settling for anything.
