It’s just like squatting in the way owls bear chicks.

What It Means

One may do things that they do not believe in or care about but have to do it none the less.

Cultural Context

Owls are considered mysterious in various cultures including the karanga cultures. Apart from their nocturnal characteristics, their round luminous eyes and horn-like feathers all adding to the aura of mystery surrounding owls, their bearing of chicks is also considered mysterious. Yet, like other fowls, owls lay eggs in a squatting position. Considering the agony of labour and comfort positions required by human beings to bear children, our ancestors felt that owls bore their young with much less conviction and desire but still had to endure their process.

How It's Used

The proverb is used to describe actions that are not genuine or done lackadaisically without a true conviction but necessary none the less. It can also be used advise one to show more desire in the work or endeavours they are pursuing.
