What the Words Say

A young lady is like a cairn, whoever comes throws/adds a stone

What It Means

lt is natural for a young lady to be courted

Cultural Context

Many graves were (and in some cases still are) symbolized by a mound of stones and those passing by would throw a stone to add to the mound as a sign of respect. In this way this proverb observes that the manner in which young men used to approach young women with amorous words was like throwing a stone at a mound. Any young man could try their luck.

How It's Used

The proverb is simply used to define relations between young adults. While parents may shield their daughters from suitors they are reminded here that when they are of age it is natural for men to throw a few words of courtship in her direction.
